Government, IFM annual meetings conclude in Amman

The annual consultative meetings between the government team and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission concluded today, Thursday, in Amman, Jordan.

The 5-day meetings discussed a number of aspects related to the latest economic, financial and monetary developments and their future prospects, and the government's plan and vision to face the current challenges, implement the necessary reforms and achieve economic recovery, with regional and international support.

The meetings also touched on the extent of the worsening humanitarian crisis and food insecurity in Yemen due to the conflict and regional tensions as well as the prolonging war ignited by the Iranian regime backed Houthi terrorist militia 10 years ago.

The meetings stressed Yemen's need amid current difficult circumstances for the continuing regional and international support for national efforts aimed at stabilizing the prices of commodities and the national currency, and gaining on to implement the necessary and urgent reforms, especially in the financial and monetary aspects, achieving economic recovery, and overcoming the challenges facing the country in various fields and vital sectors.

The IMF mission expressed its encouragement for the progress made by the Ministry of Finance in the efforts to contain the fiscal deficit by strengthening the tax and customs administrations, enhancing cash liquidity management, and being cautious in spending, which in turn led to reducing monetary financing of the budget and reducing inflationary pressures.

The mission also stressed the need for continued regional and international support for government efforts to achieve the goals of comprehensive reforms, efforts to revive the political process and achieve peace, security and stability in Yemen, to limit the exacerbation of humanitarian crises and the deterioration of basic services.

The meetings were attended by the Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen (CBY) Ahmed Ghaleb, Deputy Minister of Finance Hani Wahab, the Ambassador of our country to Jordan Dr. Jalal Fakira, several Undersecretaries of the Ministry of Finance and the CBY, Representatives of the relevant Ministries and the head of the IMF mission Esther Peres, and some of IMF experts.
