Deputy Governor of Taiz discusses humanitarian interventions with UNHCR

The Deputy Governor of Taiz Dr. Abdulqawi al-Makhlafi discussed Wednesday with Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Yemen Marine Dean Kaidum Shay and his accompanying delegation humanitarian interventions in the governorate.

During the meeting, attended by the directors of the districts of al-Qahira, Al-Muthaffar and Sala, the Deputy Governor welcomed the UNHCR delegation's visit, commending the humanitarian programs and interventions in the past period, particularly the rehabilitation of 1,500 damaged houses in the city and al-Wazi'iyah District.

He expressed his hope for more sustainable development interventions in 2025 that align with the economic and social development plan needs of the governorate.

For his part, the Director of the Planning and International Cooperation Office, Nabil Jamel, addressed the UNHCR's interventions and their impact on alleviating the humanitarian suffering of beneficiaries, outlining the key areas of the economic and social development plan for 2024-2026, along with priorities and needs across various development and service sectors, including displaced persons and returnees.

He called on the UNHCR, international and regional organizations and the private sector to contribute and partake in achieving the goals of the sustainable development plan in the governorate.

The UNHCR representative in Yemen emphasized the importance of working with the local authority in Taiz as a key partner in supporting the most vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities.

He stressed the need to transition from emergency response to development, highlighting the role of the private sector in shaping the country's future.

He reviewed recent achievements in projects supporting the operation of the Civil Status Authority with solar energy and the program for partially damaged house rehabilitation, confirming that all these efforts contribute to achieving lasting peace in Yemen.
