Member of the Presidential Leadership Council, the Governor of Marib Major General Sultan al-Aradah, discussed with a delegation from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), headed by Project Coordinator for Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (SIERY) Martin van Dril the project plans and interventions for the upcoming phase.
Al-Aradah highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian and living conditions in Yemen in general, and in Marib Governorate in particular, which faces numerous challenges due to the large population amid the ongoing wave of displacement to the governorate and the weakness of essential infrastructure.
He praised the efforts of the UNDP and its humanitarian role in Yemen over the past years, calling for the doubling of the program's interventions and upcoming humanitarian projects to support the government's efforts and local authorities in the governorates, enabling them to address the increasing humanitarian needs and alleviate the worsening crisis across the country.
He pointed out the importance of expanding the scope of SIERY project implemented by the program in Yemen to assist local authorities and enhance their capacities to ensure the continued provision of essential services to citizens and achieve recovery across all sectors, in accordance with the priorities and needs outlined in the humanitarian response plan for the coming year.
For his part, the UN official explained that this visit to Marib is part of a field tour covering several governorates aimed at monitoring the implementation of the program's projects, foremost among is (SIERY), in addition to assessing the urgent needs according to the priorities of local authorities and their need to provide essential services and enhance their response to citizens' needs.
He noted that the project primarily focuses on local economic development and activating partnerships with the private sector, aiming to address the three key challenges: The large influx of displaced persons, the slow pace of rapid development to keep up with population growth and the increasing needs for emergency assistance.
