Governor of Lahij discusses humanitarian interventions with IOM

The Governor of Lahj Major General Ahmed Turki met Monday with a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to discuss several topics related to development and humanitarian interventions being implemented and planned in the governorate.

During the meeting, Governor Turki praised the exceptional support provided by the organization, represented by its service projects executed in the districts of the governorate, both in developmental and sustainable relief efforts.

He noted that Lahij hosts displaced persons due to the Iranian-backed Houthi militia war and suffers from an influx of refugees from the Horn of Africa through illegal means.

These two factors exert significant pressure on the performance of the service sector, necessitating an increase in its capacities to fulfill its roles as required.

The Governor urged the organization to pay more attention to the host communities in the districts of the governorate, calling for particular care for the health sector and the Ibn Khaldun General Hospital in Al-Hawta, as it is a central hospital that receives patients from inside and outside the governorate.

Governor Turki highlighted that the governorate is primarily an agricultural one, with vast fertile agricultural land, and from this perspective, support for the agriculture and irrigation sector in the governorate is expected.

For their part, the IOM office director in Aden, Mohannad Al-Rubai'i, and the director of health projects and migration affairs Dr. Sharbel Samaan, presented the map of the IOM's humanitarian activities in the districts of Lahij, which focused on implementing urgent intervention programs through the establishment of camps.

The map including providing protection for displaced persons, refugees, and returnees from illegal migrants, revitalizing public educational schools, and implementing new health projects at the Ibn Khaldun Hospital in al-Hawta, the hospital in al-Turba, and the Ras al-Ara Hospital, along with providing mobile clinics along the Aden-Lahj international highway.
