Prime Minister receives Secretary-General of IMO in Aden

Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awadh bin Mubarak received the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, along with his accompanying delegation.

The Secretary General of IMO is visiting Yemen for the first time to assess the impacts and repercussions of the terrorist attacks by the Houthi militia on international navigation.

During the meeting, they reviewed the security situation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, in light of the threats and Houthi terrorist attacks on commercial ships and international navigation.

They also discussed cooperation between Yemen, the organization, and its member states to enhance joint coordination and improve the capabilities of relevant maritime security and safety agencies in Yemen.

The Prime Minister addressed the developments in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden arising from Iranian-backed Houthi piracy, which has disrupted navigation in this vital maritime corridor, as well as the humanitarian and environmental disasters resulting from it.

He pointed out to the ongoing detention of the Galaxy Leader ship and its crew, affirming the responsibility of the UN organization and its member states to support the Yemeni government in regaining control over Yemeni shores to ensure the security of the Red Sea, viewing this as a national, regional, and international interest.

Dr. Ahmed Awadh bin Mubarak welcomed the Secretary-General of the IMO on this important visit and the potential agreements that could strengthen the partnership framework between Yemen and the organization.

He emphasized the commitment of Yemen to implement the international agreements and treaties it has joined under the IMO and its intention to establish a national maritime security committee.

For his part, the Secretary-General reiterated that the protection of maritime navigation is a top priority for the organization, including preventing the deterioration of maritime security in this important region.

He pointed out the organization's support for the government of Yemen and coordination with it on all measures to ensure the protection of maritime navigation, urging member states to bolster their capabilities in this area.
