Yemen, UK discuss aspects of government support and enhancing its capabilities

Finance Minister Salem bin Breik discussed with British Minister of State for Development Anne-Marie Trevelyan on Friday issues of mutual cooperation and aspects of governmental support to enhance the performance and systems of economic institutions.

The finance minister praised British support, particularly in strengthening and building the capacities of institutions, while reviewing developments in the economic situation and the pressures and complexities facing public finances due to the economic war waged by the Houthi militia, which is backed by the Iranian regime.

He emphasized the importance of placing the economy at the top of the priorities for partners in the region and the world, as it is fundamental to the path of peace and alleviating humanitarian suffering.

Minister bin Breik also highlighted the need to design specific programs within international financial institutions that address the challenges and realities of countries experiencing conflicts, enabling them to access developmental funding, and ensuring that support is not limited to technical assistance.

For her part, the British minister reaffirmed her government's commitment to supporting Yemen politically, economically, and humanitarianly.

Acknowledging the economic challenges Yemen faces, she expressed the UK's intention to formulate initiatives that accommodate conflict-affected countries and respond to their needs.
