[07/05/2024 05:56]
ADEN - SABA
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate has said that its Secretary-General, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Journalists Mohammed Shubaita was shot injured by a gunman in Houthi terrorists-controlled Sana'a today.

A press release from the Syndicate Council stated, “Our colleague Shubaita was shot near the premises of the [former] Ministry of Information after a gunman stopped his car and started shooting, which was followed by direct gunfire on the car.”

The press release said the incident resulted in the Secretary-General being injured by two gunshots in the leg and one in the abdomen, and he was subsequently transferred to the hospital where he was receiving health care, in addition to the killing of one of his relatives and the injury of another.

The assassination attempt was met by a strong condemnation from the government in Aden. Minister of Information Muammar Al-Eryani condemned the crime in the strongest terms.

Muammar Al-Eryani said in a press statement that this heinous crime comes in light of an unprecedented increase in acts of repression and abuse practiced by the terrorist Houthi militia against politicians, journalists, media figures, trade unionists, activists and others with the aim of silencing them and discouraging them from expressing opinions and championing public causes.

Al-Eryani said that the Houthi militia had attempted to poison Member of Parliament Judge Ahmed Saif Hashid, stormed the home of journalist Khaled Al-Arasy, kidnapped him, and forcibly disappeared him, and kidnapped the specifications and standards expert engineer Mohammed Al-Maliki, amid increasing abuses in the hijacked capital Sana'a.

Al-Eryani called on the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy to Yemen, and organizations concerned with human rights and freedom of the press, most notably the International Federation of Journalists and the Union of Journalists, to issue a clear condemnation of the heinous crime, and to immediately begin labeling the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, dry up its financial, political and media sources, and devote efforts to support the government to assert its control over the country.
