Yemen, UN discuss repercussions of Houthi militia's attacks on international navigation
[06/03/2024 12:09]
NEW YORK-SABA

Yemen's Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah al-Sa'adi discussed with the Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Marting Griffiths the economic and humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The two parties discussed developments in the Red Sea and the serious repercussions of Houthi terrorist attacks on international navigation and the targeting of commercial vessels, and their impact on worsening the humanitarian crisis and the progress of humanitarian process in Yemen.

The meeting also addressed the systematic economic war waged by the Houthi militias against the Yemeni people, targeting oil facilities and depriving the Yemeni government of resources.

They called for economic and developmental support to the Yemeni government to fulfill its commitments, including transferring funds from international organizations and United Nations agencies operating in Yemen through the Yemeni Central Bank in the temporary capital, Aden.

They reiterated the importance of transferring from the relief and humanitarian phase to focusing on the developmental and economic aspects, which represents the optimal way to alleviate humanitarian suffering and support the efforts of the Yemeni government in facing current challenges.

They emphasized the importance of creating effective mechanisms and evaluating the work of humanitarian agencies operating in Yemen to deal with the economic and humanitarian situation and support the plans and programs of the Yemeni government in various fields.

The meeting also addressed the targeting of Houthi militias of the cargo ship Rubymar in the Red Sea and the imminent environmental, economic, and humanitarian catastrophe resulting from the sinking of this ship.

They emphasized the importance of responding to the request of the Yemeni government to prevent such a disaster and the need to establish an international emergency mechanism to deal with such disasters.

The meeting discussed the financing gap and its impact on providing humanitarian needs and preparations for holding the donor conference to support the humanitarian response plan for 2024.
