Rubymar's Crisis Cell discusses disastrous repercussions of cargo ship's sinking

The Crisis Management Cell of the "Rubymar" cargo ship, chaired by the Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi, was held Tuesday here to discuss the catastrophic repercussions of the sinking of the cargo ship Rubimar in the Red Sea, and the possible developments of the incident.

The meeting, which included the Ministers of Environment of Djibouti and Eritrea, as well as ambassadors from several European Union countries, the United States, Britain, and China, representatives of international environmental organizations, experts, and the Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator in Yemen, Diego Zorilla, discussed the joint steps and positions regarding the response plan to the risks of environmental pollution and the necessary measures to contain the repercussions of the disaster on the Yemeni coasts, the Red Sea, and the surrounding countries.

The Minister of Water and Environment reviewed the catastrophic damage caused by the Houthi militias' attack on the Rubymar ship and the threats resulting from the repetition of military operations on maritime navigation routes and their impact on marine and environmental life.

Engineer al-Sharjabi referred to Security Council Resolution 2216, which recommended preventing the flow of weapons to the Houthis, and Resolution 2722, which encourages member states to support the efforts to build the capacities of the Yemeni government's Coast Guard and ports in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to enhance maritime security.

He called on the regional and international community to assume their responsibility to stop these threats and the disasters caused by the terrorist Houthi militias, and to assist Yemen in facing the challenges associated with this issue.

For his part, the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations clarified the United Nations' keenness to provide aspects of technical support to the relevant authorities of the Yemeni government and to deploy a number of experts who are expected to arrive in the coming two days, as well as coordinating with international organizations to effectively address the repercussions of the ship's sinking.

The meeting included a presentation of the response plan submitted by the Crisis Management Cell, the efforts exerted, the requirements to confront the crisis, and contain its repercussions.
