Torrential rains in Taiz cause deaths of 15 people, widespread material losses

Floods resulting from heavy rainfall hit districts of Mocha, Wawzaa, Alwaziyah, Jabal Habashi and Makbana on Friday March 27, 2026, caused significant human and material losses in several areas within host communities.

Sites and camps for internally displaced persons have been also severely impacted.

According to a preliminary report issued by the Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Taiz, a copy of which was obtained by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the floods resulted in the deaths of 15 people, including women and children.

Among them were 9 fatalities in Mocha and 6 in Mawzaa, in addition to 9 others reported missing in areas of Mocha district.

The report indicated that initial statistics recorded 5,883 affected families from both host communities and displaced populations due to the floods.

The damage included partial and total destruction of homes, as well as losses of household items, food supplies, and livestock.

The Executive Unit stressed the urgent need for intervention in the shelter sector to repair or replace damaged tents and shelters, rehabilitate damaged house roofs and provide emergency shelter materials for affected families such as blankets, mattresses, plastic sheeting and rain protection tools.

It also emphasized the importance of providing urgent food assistance to families who lost their food supplies due to the floods and immediate intervention in the water and sanitation sector to address sewage overflows and blockages, reduce health risks, open blocked roads, and drain rainwater from the most flood-prone areas.

The report further highlighted the need to rehabilitate agricultural lands that were washed away by the floods and to conduct a joint field assessment by relevant humanitarian organizations to more accurately determine the scale of the required response.
