ADEN - SABA
The Masam Project has warned of the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance that may be swept into new areas by floodwaters following heavy rains across several Yemeni governorates.
In a statement to Saba, Masam said torrential rains in Marib, Shabwa, Al-Jawf, Taiz, and Al-Hodeidah have caused floods that can carry mines and unexploded remnants of war from contaminated areas into villages, residential areas, roads, and valley channels, posing a serious threat to civilians.
The statement urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid approaching, touching, or moving any suspicious objects, noting that some explosives may be concealed under mud, rocks, or flood debris, making them difficult to detect and highly dangerous.
It also stressed the importance of adhering to safety guidelines, particularly avoiding flood paths and recently affected areas, keeping children away from water pools and open spaces after rainfall, and refraining from grazing or collecting firewood in unfamiliar or uncleared areas.
Masam emphasized the need to immediately report any suspicious objects by contacting demining teams operating in the affected areas, relevant authorities, or the nearest security point.
The project noted that mines displaced by floods pose an even greater risk, as they may be carried into areas previously declared safe. It reiterated that safety is a shared responsibility, calling on the public to cooperate and report any suspicious items to help protect lives and property.
